WL-HDD 2.5 IEEE 802.11g 54 Mbps WLAN Hard Drive Box
Instead of a diskless Samba-based box like the Linksys’ NSLU2, or a NAS like Maxtor’s HD-MAH31R300, the WL-HDD is less hackable, but with with a built-in 802.11g (compatible with 11b devices) access point and in a much smaller box (smaller than a VHS cassette) .
The unit comes with a USB port, a 10/100 Ethernet LAN port, a reset button, and four status LEDs for the USB, power, WLAN, and HDD. The Ethernet port serves to connect the device to your network, via cable modem, switch, hub, router, or whatever network connection device that you use.
It houses a 2.5-inch laptop hard disk with a storage capacity of 60GB. Users can format the drive to up to four partitions, and configure it using an application called the Web Manager. Files on the drive can be freely shareable, have read-access only or be restricted to password-owning users.
Users of memory cards and Flash drives can also copy their files directly to the WL-HDD via its USB port. The drive comes with an auto-copy function that dumps all the contents of memory cards into separate folders, which can then be shared across the network. To copy files, just plug in your flash drive into the WL-HDD’s USB port. Or you can insert your CF, SD/MMC and other memory cards into an external card reader and plug it to the USB port using a USB cable.
