Matt Cutts of Google has posted some photos of him unboxing the Wal-Mart/Everex $200 Linux-based PC, and I have to admit that Im impressed by what I see.

For example, the package comes with everything you need except a monitor – keyboard, mouse, and even USB-powered speakers. With LCD monitors at Walmart ranging from $135 for an LCD panel and $160 for a widescreen panel, you get a a complete PC for under $US350. This price point is only acheivable because the OEM (in this case Walmart) doesn’t have to pay the Apple / Microsoft Operating System tax.

Walmart PC runs the gOS distribution of Linux

Power users may think it’s a toy after looking at the specs (1.5GHz Via C7 CPU, an 80GB hard drive and 512MB of RAM), but remember it’s not running Vista, and it’s not designed to be a power machine. Based on the reviews, below, it’s responsive enough for a web machine (think google apps….).

Because it’s open source, the the gOS operating system is downloadable for installation on any x86 system.
