Firefox – How to update add-on compatibility manually
By Martin English | February 8, 2008
Each Firefox add-on has two variables called min version and max version. When Firefox says the add-on is not caompatible, all it is doing is checking it’s current version number against these two values. If the current version falls outside these two value, it pops up a message saying incompatible.
Many times add-ons are ‘incompatible’ with the latest release of firefox, not because they would fail or display errors but simply because the author did not update the min version and max version values for the add-on.
If you have to have an incompatible add-on, you can fix it.
Download the add-on to your hard drive. Unzip the file – It has the xpi extension (Windows users – do NOT associate the xpi extension with your unpack / unzip program). I use WinRAR or RAR, depending on the platform, but any unpackers or zip utility can be used. The contents of the add-on should be extracted to your hard drive, including a file called install.rdf.
Open the install.rdf file in a editor and search for minVersion and maxVersion. Change the values to of both entries so that your version of Firefox is compatible with the add-on and save the new file. Now drop it into the archive once again and install the add-on again.
The installation should go through without problems.
