How to uninstall MSN Messenger from an XP system

By Martin English | February 4, 2008

Whether you use MSN Messenger or not, it comes pre-installed and runs all on its own. It can annoy the hell out of people who want control over their machine. There are several alternative methods of getting rid of it. Warning - if you use Outlook or Outlook Express it will slow down their load times as they try to start up MSN Messenger, but it may be worth it, if only to get rid of that horrible Messenger Spam…

One quick way is to get MSN Messenger to show up in Add/Remove programs.

  1. Locate SYSOC.INF in the \Windows\INF folder (It’s a hidden file and folder, so you may need change some values in Explorer in Tools –> Folder Options)
  2. Open it in Notepad
  3. Locate the line: msmsgs=msgrocm.dll,OcEntry,msmsgs.inf,hide,7
  4. Remove the word hide from the line and save the file.

Now if you look in Add/Remove Windows Components in the Add or Remove Programs panel in your Control Panel, MSN Messenger will be present and will also allow you to remove it!

Another method is to run (START –> RUN) the following command:
rundll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %WinDir%\inf\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
and then Reboot

Warning: As always editing system files can do permanent harm to your machine.
