FireEagle and Twitter

By Martin English | March 6, 2008

FireEagle is Yahoo’s Physical Location Tracking service. Some people have reservations, but according to Read Write Web’s review of FireEagle, this service covers these pretty comprehensively

From the FireEagle site:

“Fire Eagle is the secure and stylish way to share your location with sites and services online while giving you unprecedented control over your data and privacy,” “We’re here to make the whole web respond to your location and help you to discover more about the world around you.”

One of the initial applications allows you to update your location via twitter.  Unfortunately, the instructions in Jesse Newland’s original post (as linked from the Read Write Web article) aren’t entirely accurate.

I got my FireEagle Invitation via Twitter and registered at FireEagle’s site.  Note that it’s a yahoo site, and registration is via a yahoo id.

In twitter, I followed dangerday, then I sent a direct message to dangerday, to update my location.

d dangerday u Atlanta, GA

I received a reply saying I wasn’t authorised:

you're not authorized yet. 'd dangerday auth' to get started

I sent the direct message to danger day, and received a reply

ahoy, martin_english! please visit (url redacted) to authorize dangerday

I did so, accepted the most public option, and now I’m able to update my location from twitter.

update

To find where I am, once you’ve registered and authorised yourself with dangerday, query dangerday with my twitter user

d dangerday q martin_english

Now all I have to do is use the FireEagle API to write a WP plugin to display my location here….
