Associate Email Links with your webmail in Firefox

By Martin English | October 28, 2008

The Google toolbar already provided a feature for this, but you can also do it right in the latest version of Firefox (3.0 onwards): associate “mailto” links in web pages with Gmail (or yahoo or Windows mail), so that when you click on, say, this address you’ll be instantly forwarded to create a new message in the Google (or yahoo or Microsoft) email client.

Associating the action 'gmail' with the 'mailto' content-type

Open Tools -> Options -> Applications, and look for the entry titled “mailto”. In the dropdown box, pick Gmail (or whoever is registered there).

Update: If you wish to add ‘your’ webmail to this list, either it needs to have the option provided somewhere (similar to yahoo mail)

Failing that, there are instructions on how Mail providers (and others !!) can register an email client which is not listed in Firefox defaults. You (or the email provider, sorry) use the Mozilla web-based protocols handler API) provided by Firefox, to provide support for users of a particular webmail service.

  • Wow!! That is one awesome tip. No I don't have to worry about Evolution (Linux) opening up every time I click on a link.
