Les Paul, NOT the inventor of the electric guitar

no comments

Almost all the reports of the death of American electric guitar pioneer Les Paul, give the impression he was single-handedly responsible for the creation of the solid-body electric guitar that made rock and roll possible. It’s as if Adolph Rickenbacker, Paul Bigsby, Merle Travis or Leo Fender never existed.

The Electric Guitar was not invented, rather it evolved over several decades. Karl du Fresne has a decent potted history of the electric guitar, from the early electrification experiments of Rickenbacker in the 1930′s through to the Fender Telecaster (1952), and the Stratocaster (1954).

One of the best pars, designed to start a good argument between two or more giutarists, is this:

Arguments about which is the greater guitar – the Fender Stratocaster or the Gibson Les Paul – are a bit like debates between Holden and Ford fans, and ultimately just as pointless. But judged by which guitar was more favoured by great players, the Strat would surely have the edge.

Warlach’s Band has a new Album

Actually, it doesn’t. And neither does mine. It’s the current meme du Jour of the web. I normally don’t indulge in these, but this one intrigued me…

From Warlach’s World, the instructions for creating your own album cover:

1 – Go to “wikipedia.” Hit “random”
or click http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first random wikipedia article you get is the name of your band.

2 – Go to “Random quotations”
or click http://www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four or five words of the very last quote of the page is the title of your first album.

3 – Go to flickr and click on “explore the last seven days”
or click http://www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days

Third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

My Album is Crazy Enough To Be True by Madhucca Penicillata. I think of it as the debut album by a hardcore Punk Thrash Surf Guitar group – think Duane Eddy or Dick Dale, if they had played with the Ramones, plus just a touch of Billy Idol’s lip curling contempt for those that don’t surf…..

Converting MP4 to MP3

I know there’s a lot of sites (like vidtomp3) that let you extract music from online videos. But what if you already have the video (in my case, some *.mp4 files) on hand ?

Converting MP4 files to MP3 is quite easy, once you have appropriate software. I used google to find the free version of NCH Software’s Switch Audio File Conversion (this is provided free as a teaser for Switch Plus – you can download Switch Plus demo here or purchase Switch Plus online here).

The options are laid out very simply, but are comprehensive enough for me. You can can control

  • whether you’re converting an entire folder or just a bunch of files,
  • your output bitrate,
  • the location of the output files …

It may be a basic program by true audio engineer standards, but it meets my (9albeit simple) requirenments.

New Skin for your Music Hardware

no comments

At StyleFlip.com, you can design your own adhesive vinyl skin for a variety of music gear — turntables, CD players, DJ mixers, drum machines, keyboards and more. (The company says the skins are removable and leave no residue.) The site’s Flash-based interface is easy to suss out, and the previews look dramatic.

With so many mass-produced instruments out there, it’s great to have an easy way to add some personality. Sure, it’s only skin-deep, but even small customizations can change the way you feel about your instruments, deepening your music.

Play YouTube Videos in a Loop

There are two ways (that I know of) to play a youtube video in a loop.

image

The first one requires that you manipulate the loop parameter of the embeddable player (here’s the complete list of parameters) – in the example, replace VIDEOID with the ID of the video you’re playing:

href="http://www.youtube.com/v/VIDEOID&loop=1

If you add the autoplay parameter, the video will start to play automatically: http://www.youtube.com/v/VIDEOID&loop=1&autoplay=1

Another method is to use Loopy for YouTube, a Greasemonkey script that adds a small link below the video to start the loop. The script requires Greasemonkey , a Firefox extension, and it’s efficient in that it doesn’t reload the page to download the video again.

old school mixtapes with mixwit.com

One of my memories of growing up was making mixtapes for road trips. New Zealand doesn’t look like a big country, but the roads were (still are !!) tight and twisty. One trip we used to regularly make was about 80 miles as the crows file, but over 200 miles driving.

Now that we have Mixwit, I’ve pulled together some of my current ‘golden oldie’ favourites. I’ll be curious to see what (if any) feedback i get….

Grab the latest music from Youtube

from GHacks :

You can use a Firefox extension like Download Helper for instance to download the videos in first place. When you start FLV Extract uncheck Video and Timecodes so that only the Audio option is enabled. Now drag and drop files whose music you want to have into the program window. It takes only a few seconds to rip the music from the video.

Finding music videos on Youtube should not be a problem. Either search for the song, album or artist and you should find plenty of music videos that you can download or rip online. Pretty effective way to increase the music collection.

UPDATE: Once you have the file – either as a download or the location of the FLV – you can use FLVto to extract the audio as an MP3

Download YouTube Videos as MP4 Files

no comments

From the Official Australian Google Blog:
An interesting side-effect of YouTube’s recent push for higher quality videos is that most videos can be downloaded as MP4 files directly from YouTube. Until now, you could only get FLV files from your browser’s cache or using one of the many websites that let you download YouTube videos. In fact, to download the MP4 files, you need to use the same URL like for FLV files and append “&fmt=18″:

http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=ID&t=SIGNATURE&fmt=18

ID is the video’s identification value, SIGNATURE is a value that prevents you from downloading the file just by knowing the ID. You could create this URL by looking at the source code of a YouTube page, but it’s much easier to automatically generate it.

One way is to save the following link as a bookmarklet by dragging it to your Links bar (in Firefox, Safari) or right-clicking and adding it to your favorites (in Internet Explorer, Opera):

If you didn’t manage to add the bookmarklet, this post has more detailed instructions.

When you want to download a YouTube video, click on the bookmarklet and you should see a new option below the embeddable code.

YouTube doesn’t send the right MIME type so don’t click on the download link. Right-click and select “save link as” or “save target as” and enter a proper name for the video. Make sure to use the .mp4 extension when you enter the filename.

If using the bookmarklet is annoying, try this Greasemonkey script, which adds the download link automatically. It requires the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox or a similar plug-in for userscripts. Opera has built-in support for userscripts, so you only need to go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content > JavaScript options, select the directory where you will put your script and copy the script to that directory.

YouTube’s MP4 files have a higher resolution, stereo sound and can be played with applications like VLC, MPlayer, iTunes, QuickTime. Not all YouTube videos can be downloaded as MP4 files and the fallback format is FLV.

UPDATE: Once you have the file – either as a download or the location of the FLV – you can use FLVto to extract the audio as an MP3

Is your ISP is messing with your BitTorrents ?

no comments

We have seen claims that almost 70% of ALL Internet traffic is P2P (but no one can tell what the ratio of legal vs. illegal content is).  Since then, many ISP’s have taken it upon themselves to throttle down BT related traffic, despite the fact that no one knows whether you’re downloading a Linux Distribution or an illegal Britney song.  So how do you know whether you’re being throttled, and by how much ?

Check out this Azerus / Vuze plug-in.  It tells you how many times your BT connections are interrupted.

From the website:

Help Azureus (Vuze) gather data on Internet traffic throttling.

This plug-in works with your Azureus (Vuze) application to gather information regarding interference with your Internet access and send it to Azureus (Vuze).

Specifically, this small piece of software monitors your network connections and every ten minutes measures the number of interrupted connections (called reset tcp connections) and then displays the results to you. By selecting the share results check-box you can also share these results with our central server, which enables us to then aggregate the results and compare them with customers of other ISPs. We strongly encourage you to mark the share results setting.

Sharing this data with us does not involve disclosure of any of your personally identifiable information. Azureus (Vuze) may aggregate the data collected and talk about it or disclose it publicly, but no data about any specific user will be disclosed. Use of this plug-in has a negligible impact on your network usage.
Right now the plug-in only works on PCs, not Macs, but we are actively working on future versions. Users from all countries are welcome to participate.

Alternatively, if you rather install the plug-in using the plug-in wizard built into our application, go to our Wiki to learn how to do that.
