AVG 8.0 Freeware released, with protection from spyware

no comments

A few months ago, Grisoft updated its AVG anti-virus suite to version 8 and included linkscanning, anti-spyware, and anti-rootkit software to boot. Now the popular freeware equivalent of Grisoft’s anti-virus application is getting some of the same features.

AVG8 Free - Web PageAVG Free 8 is out, and not only does it protect your system from viruses, but you get spyware detection as well.

Obviously, AVG Free 8 won’t have all of the features you get in the commercial version of the application. There’s no rootkit protection or linkscanner. And there’s no email or instant messaging integration. For those features you’ll have to shell out between $US35 and $US55 for the standard or “internet security” versions. However, the free version does come with real-time protection, daily updates, and complete system scans at regularly scheduled intervals.

Is your ISP is messing with your BitTorrents ?

We have seen claims that almost 70% of ALL Internet traffic is P2P (but no one can tell what the ratio of legal vs. illegal content is).  Since then, many ISP’s have taken it upon themselves to throttle down BT related traffic, despite the fact that no one knows whether you’re downloading a Linux Distribution or an illegal Britney song.  So how do you know whether you’re being throttled, and by how much ?

Check out this Azerus / Vuze plug-in.  It tells you how many times your BT connections are interrupted.

From the website:

Help Azureus (Vuze) gather data on Internet traffic throttling.

This plug-in works with your Azureus (Vuze) application to gather information regarding interference with your Internet access and send it to Azureus (Vuze).

Specifically, this small piece of software monitors your network connections and every ten minutes measures the number of interrupted connections (called reset tcp connections) and then displays the results to you. By selecting the share results check-box you can also share these results with our central server, which enables us to then aggregate the results and compare them with customers of other ISPs. We strongly encourage you to mark the share results setting.

Sharing this data with us does not involve disclosure of any of your personally identifiable information. Azureus (Vuze) may aggregate the data collected and talk about it or disclose it publicly, but no data about any specific user will be disclosed. Use of this plug-in has a negligible impact on your network usage.
Right now the plug-in only works on PCs, not Macs, but we are actively working on future versions. Users from all countries are welcome to participate.

Alternatively, if you rather install the plug-in using the plug-in wizard built into our application, go to our Wiki to learn how to do that.

Old Media has One advantage over New

Sports Illustrated faces daily, even hourly, competition with ESPN, Yahoo Sports and others, but it has something its main rivals do not: a 53-year trove of articles and photos, most of it from an era when the magazine dominated the field of long-form sports writing and color sports photography.

Sports Illustrated has introduced the Vault, a free site within SI.com that contains all the words Sports Illustrated has ever published and many of the images, along with video and other material, in a searchable database.

Baseball Pitches Illustrated

Check out Baseball Pitches Illustrated, a beautifully-rendered set of infographics describing the speed and trajectory of a whole list of common pitches.

The site has picked twelve of the more common pitches:

  • Fastballs: Four-seam, Two-seam, Cutter, Splitter, and Forkball
  • Breaking Balls: Curveball, Slider, Slurve, and Screwball
  • Changeups: Changeup, Palmball, Circle Changeup

Things to watch for that will help you identify a pitch:

  • Speed
  • Movement – the general direction the ball is moving
  • Break – a sudden shift in direction

The graphics are clear and easy to understand, yet each one has enough information to spark a discussion or a brainy game of catch. The whole set is also available as a vector illustration in PDF, perfect for printing a poster.
