Grab the latest music from Youtube

no comments

from GHacks :

You can use a Firefox extension like Download Helper for instance to download the videos in first place. When you start FLV Extract uncheck Video and Timecodes so that only the Audio option is enabled. Now drag and drop files whose music you want to have into the program window. It takes only a few seconds to rip the music from the video.

Finding music videos on Youtube should not be a problem. Either search for the song, album or artist and you should find plenty of music videos that you can download or rip online. Pretty effective way to increase the music collection.

UPDATE: Once you have the file – either as a download or the location of the FLV – you can use FLVto to extract the audio as an MP3

Download YouTube Videos as MP4 Files

no comments

From the Official Australian Google Blog:
An interesting side-effect of YouTube’s recent push for higher quality videos is that most videos can be downloaded as MP4 files directly from YouTube. Until now, you could only get FLV files from your browser’s cache or using one of the many websites that let you download YouTube videos. In fact, to download the MP4 files, you need to use the same URL like for FLV files and append “&fmt=18″:

http://www.youtube.com/get_video?video_id=ID&t=SIGNATURE&fmt=18

ID is the video’s identification value, SIGNATURE is a value that prevents you from downloading the file just by knowing the ID. You could create this URL by looking at the source code of a YouTube page, but it’s much easier to automatically generate it.

One way is to save the following link as a bookmarklet by dragging it to your Links bar (in Firefox, Safari) or right-clicking and adding it to your favorites (in Internet Explorer, Opera):

If you didn’t manage to add the bookmarklet, this post has more detailed instructions.

When you want to download a YouTube video, click on the bookmarklet and you should see a new option below the embeddable code.

YouTube doesn’t send the right MIME type so don’t click on the download link. Right-click and select “save link as” or “save target as” and enter a proper name for the video. Make sure to use the .mp4 extension when you enter the filename.

If using the bookmarklet is annoying, try this Greasemonkey script, which adds the download link automatically. It requires the Greasemonkey extension for Firefox or a similar plug-in for userscripts. Opera has built-in support for userscripts, so you only need to go to Tools > Preferences > Advanced > Content > JavaScript options, select the directory where you will put your script and copy the script to that directory.

YouTube’s MP4 files have a higher resolution, stereo sound and can be played with applications like VLC, MPlayer, iTunes, QuickTime. Not all YouTube videos can be downloaded as MP4 files and the fallback format is FLV.

UPDATE: Once you have the file – either as a download or the location of the FLV – you can use FLVto to extract the audio as an MP3

Record your screen with Camstudio

no comments

Did you ever want to record a quick tutorial on how to open ports or some other question you get hit with daily?  Do you need to show your granny exactly how you do your funky effects in WordPress ? If so, check out the FREE video recording application CamStudio.

CamStudio is able to record all screen and audio activity on your computer and create industry-standard AVI video files and using its built-in SWF Producer can turn those AVIs into lean, mean, bandwidth-friendly Streaming Flash videos (SWFs)

Some AVI output (22MB !!)

The same output in SWF format (2.8B !!)

You have total control over the output of your video: you can choose to use custom cursors, to record the whole screen or just a section of it and can reduce or increase the quality of the recording depending on if you want smaller videos (for emailing to people, for instance) or you can have "best quality" ones for burning onto CD/DVD.

Installing Adobe flash player on Ubuntu 7.10

A flash player is a must have plugin for browsers. Without it you cannot acess a lot of video sharing sites such as YouTube. By default, Ubuntu doesn’t come with a flash player because the Adobe flash player is proprietary. The solution is to manually install the flash player.

# get the flash player from the macromedia website (above) or by using wget
wget http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/get/flashplayer/current/install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz

# extract the tar file
tar xvf install_flash_player_9_linux.tar.gz

# run the installer – You will asked to close all the browser windows during this.
cd install_flash_player_9_linux
./flashplayer-installer

# specify the firefox folder during installation
/usr/lib/firefox

And that is it. Restart your browser and you can watch flash videos on Ubuntu! (This also shows why it may be better for your grandma to stick with Windows).

What Freelancers Can Learn from Evel Knievel

no comments

back in my callow youth, I was a bit of a fan of Evel Knievel.

I really enjoyed this fun, surprisingly thoughtful post. Its a list of 10 things about Evel Knievel that anyone can use, ranging from He wasn’t the best, he was the best known to It wasn’t work that was his downfall.

Anyone of a certain age will know the name Evel Knievel. He was an icon and hero for kids growing up in the 1970’s. For anyone who the Evel Knievel has passed by, he was a famous American motorbike stunt driver and daredevil, known for tearing it up and causing a spectacle both on and off his bike.

Robin Williams on Letterman

no comments

The first David Letterman show of 2008 screened in NZ last night. A writers’ guild strike has grounded many shows. However, Letterman owns his own show so was able to do a deal with the union. (apparently, Jay Leno is in trouble with the union because he dared to write his own jokes,).

Letterman’s first guest was Robin Williams, who was just non stop hilarious.

The video I found (above) shows the first eight minutes, and Williams comes on at about 4:45 . He just takes the piss out of Letterman’s beard calling him General Lee, Rabbi, Grandpa, etc.

Frostwire: Limewire’s open source cousin

no comments

Limewire is one of the most popular Peer to Peer file sharing applications around, and it’s easy to see why. With its simple but powerful interface, it’s the next best thing to old school Napster. One thing that cheapskates and teenagers don’t like about it, however, is its tendency to nag the user to upgrade to Limewire Pro for a fee.

The alternative is Frostwire. It is virtually indistinguishable from Limewire and works just fine. It allows the user to download just about any kind of file from a massive community of Limewire and Gnutella users.

Frostwire is available for Windows, OS X, and Linux. Ubuntu and Debian users can grab it from Synaptic, and everyone else can check out the download site.

SpeedDate PR stunt

Popout

If your name is SpeedDate.com, here’s a great idea for a PR stunt: Mix 8 celebrity bloggers and a SpeedDate.com session, bake at 400 degrees, record, and release the highlight reel on YouTube.

funniest moments of the video is when Aaron Rowe of wired asks Justine of iJustine.TV, “Why? Would you like to come over and play doctor?”
